Loop bucks

If the costs of installing a geothermal system are an obstacle for you, the Loop Bucks program through the Wisconsin Geothermal Association and Wisconsin Focus on Energy can help.

How does the program work?

Economic value The Loop Bucks program is available to homeowners in northeast Wisconsin (see below).

A Wisconsin Geothermal Association member contractor or designer will specify the length of geothermal loop required for your system. Loop Bucks are calculated based on the number of feet of loop installed (see below).

Your contractor will help you complete the Loop Bucks Reward Program application and send it in for approval. Payment is made after successful installation of your geothermal system.

How much is the incentive?

The rewards are calculated based on the size of your system, the number of feet of loop installed and whether your installation is horizontal or vertical:

Size of system $ per foot - horizontal Maximum
25 tons or less $0.25 $500
Over 25 tons $0.25 $750
Size of system $ per foot - vertical Maximum

When are the Loop Bucks payments made?

  • After a project has been given approval to receive a Loop Bucks reward, funds are set aside for the project. Project approval does NOT guarantee payment.
  • The contractor notifies the Wisconsin Geothermal Association that the installation is complete.
  • The WGA reserves the right to inspect the installation to verify program compliance.
  • If the project is installed as proposed, payment is made.

Wisconsin Focus on Energy program administrators have requested pooling Loop Bucks applications to reduce processing cost. The WGA expects a four- to six-week time frame from project completion to reward payment.
